Specialist in General Surgery and Visceral Surgery

The Department of Surgery has 29 beds and operates several specialized outpatient clinics alongside general surgical services, including hernia, proctological and diabetic vascular out-patient departments, among others. Our surgical spectrum covers the full range of general and visceral surgery – excluding resective procedures on the pancreas, liver, and esophagus. In cooperation with the Internal Medicine Department we run an endoscopy unit equipped with the latest technology. Our operating rooms and intensive care unit with 6 beds meet the latest technical standards and requirements.

At the core of our healthcare mission is providing solid surgical care for the population of the Spittal/Drau district. We stand out for our high level of expertise in both open and laparoscopic abdominal surgery, including oncological treatment of tumors of the GI tract and the thyroid. Our team has extensive experience in diagnosing and treating functional GI disorders (e.g., reflux), proctological conditions, thyroid, and vascular diseases. Since 2025, we-ve been using the surgical robot "Dexter" by Swiss company Distalmotion for eligible procedures, allowing flexible switching between robotic and laparoscopic techniques during operations.

Our surgical department has been certified as a Hernia Center of Excellence by the German Society of General and Visceral Surgery (DGAV) and the German Hernia Society (DGH) since 2018, making hernia care one of our core areas. We were also the first department in Austria to be awarded the quality seal of the West German Colorectal Center for certified colon cancer surgery. The team currently includes one department head, seven specialists and three assistant physicians.

Your Responsibilities

• Organizing and performing surgical procedures
• Working in surgical outpatient clinics
• Contributing to the development of our robotic surgery program (Dexter)
• Collaborating with other medical departments
• Supervising and training resident physicians
• Taking on night and weekend shifts

Remuneration is based on the current salary scheme of the State of Carinthia. Previous work experience will be recognized in accordance with legal regulations and may increase the gross salary if applicable.
