Decent first job

I was working at TCS as an IT service desk analyst for more than 2.5 years which was clearly more than enough. The salary is gentle, about the same as the competitors can provide, but the benefits are poor. My project was a well functioning project, with competent management, but the same may not apply for all the projects. There is huge fluctuation at the company, which made me feel like it was not as professional as it should be. The processes are slow as basically India has to approve the highest number of queries. (E.g. Badge arrives 3 weeks after your first day from India.) The local HR, Payroll could be accessed on given days in the building which was not enough. I had incredible workload sometimes as the company often could not employ enough people who spoke the rare language that we supported. This caused frustration and general dissatisfaction. The kitchen in my floor was kinda untended and dirty and the same can be said about the restrooms. However I've learnt a lot of about myself, IT and customer handling which is pretty usefull for the future

Ho lavorato per TCS (Budapest) per tre soli mesi, nonostante al termine di essi avrei potuto firmare un contratto a tempo indeterminato, ho deciso di andarmene volontariamente in quanto non penso sia un'azienda che sia in grado di farti crescere molto professionalmente. Per me è stato un posto carino dove iniziare la mia carriera data la mancanza di esperienza, ma non lo consiglierei a chi ha già avuto delle esperienze lavorative formative in altre multinazionali. Tra gli aspetti positivi c'è sicuramente un ottimo ambiente internazionale (ci sono davvero persone di tutto il mondo, quindi è ottimo per migliorare l'inglese!), tra quelli negativi un ambiente di lavoro chiuso (almeno nel mio progetto) in quanto anche se lavoravamo in team, ogni di noi aveva un proprio computer separato con quello degli altri, quindi le possibilità di avere delle conversazioni durante il lavoro erano davvero basse. Questa cosa l'ho odiata perchè non mi è stata chiarita in sede di colloquio e non sono predisposto naturalmente a lavori di questo genere.

A good company if the global management considers this branch important

I have been working here for 7,5 years. The local management tries their best to facilitate all improvements, but pretty much depends on the global managements decision, that is in recent years leaning towards becoming a strategically unimportant player. This is seen also on the type and amount of internal and external opportunities, lack of infrastructure improvement plus the amount of excellently skilled people leaving and joining other competitors in the city.

Not the place to expand your career

Probably a good place to start your career, you can learn the basics here but the possibilities to progress are VERY limited. Developmental processes are a mess - at best. They only provide internal certifications which are not accepted on the job market by any other decent company. Considerable percentage of the management is from India, and they have a VERY different approach when it comes to work (compared to western countries) and work/life balance. Probably the best thing about working at TATA is, that you will develop the ability to differentiate between good, decent and poor working environments (TATA is the latter unfortunately). The amount of bureaucracy you'll have to face here is just unnerving. EVERYTHING has go through India, therefore it's not unusual to wait months until they figure out something. It does not matter what your query was about. Example: If you manage to get a promotion, you will work for months without any kind of contract you signed about it - there will be no compensation in the end either. The company does not provide any kind of motivation for the generic employee to be loyal. The fluctuation rate is very high - even compared to other companies in the field.

Every day you face new challenges which making your work interesting. The day is finished very fast as you are busy along the whole day. I learned many cross cultural behavior, and financial aspects that I did not know before. Great co-workers, open minded people with willingness to accept different people from different cultures. Management is willing to hear the employees, you always can speak with the project manager and he will listen without making you wrong or give you bad feedback. Open minded and with it professional attitude. probably time to go home is the hardest part as there is many targets to reach. every part of the day is enjoyable and you learn all the time new things.

This is a multi-cultural environment with lots of different people. The selary is fairly good, benefits are good. But some things are limited, such computers are fairly old and has difficulties to support newer programs and faster internet. Management is ok but would expect more support for outings and team buildings. The company is otherwise very well established, it is a great learning environment, to gain experience and proper behaviour. It has a wide range of opportunities with various projects.
